In a partnership with AT&T, General Motors has plans to roll out 5G connectivity in some Chevrolet models starting with model year 2024. This upgrade will offer faster internet speeds, improved over-the-air software updates, and better coverage. Drivers of eligible vehicles will have access to AT&T’s vast 5G network, which provides coverage for more than 250 million people.
For anyone who owns a 2019 or newer model with 4G LTE capabilities, they will also experience improved network performance and speed once the 5G network infrastructure is available. With 5G capabilities, GM can improve other tech features including the advanced Super Cruise technology and its Vehicle Intelligence Platform.
“By connecting millions of GM vehicles to our nationwide 5G network, we will improve the customer experience for existing services while laying the groundwork for the next wave of innovation including autonomous driving,” said Gregory Wieboldt, senior vice president, Global Business, Industry Solutions, AT&T.
GM has been working with AT&T since 2014 when it launched its in-vehicle Wi-Fi capabilities. Since then, GM has continued to offer best-in-class connectivity in millions of vehicles. With the adoption of 5G technology, this will pave the way for the automaker to move towards future technology like vehicle-to-electric grid communication, smart city transportation, and other mobility services.
